I want to go test this thing out on the lake and decide if it is worth continuing the project.

I got the thing running on a spare tank (clean/new) with a remanufactured carb with muffs (yes, lower was dropped).

I have verified that the thing shifts and prop spins. I also have a spare electric motor and an oar for emergency. Boat US with towing.

How do I verify that the cooling system/water pump is working?

What drains do I need to close (How many, where)?

I will check the lube in lower (not replacing yet), oil, insert drain plug, etc.

What would you guys do? ...besides nuke it from orbit :D

Thanks in advance!

I would use det-chord

you have to check the lube in the intermediate, the upper, and the lower - all 3 places.
you need to check the lube in the tilt-clutch case as well
you should replace the raw water pump (whole pump kit, and not just the impeller)
you should inspect the vertical drive shaft
you should inspect the ball gears
you should grease the pivot
you should grease the trunnion mounts
you should make sure the motor oil has been change
you should verify the points gap, timing, and dwell

being a 1982, in addition to towing insurance, make sure you have PFD's a towing rope, your safety gear as required by the USCG, radio and cell
