IMG_5010.jpgIMG_5007.jpgHi - I yes picked up a very cheap QD-18 as my first restore project. I basically got it for $25 in non-running condition, so I don't have alot into this thing if it is a basket case. I could part it out and with just the tank I'd recover my investment".

I have a shop manual and have seen various write-ups online on these motors.

The initial once over shows most of it in reasonabley good shape but I have a couple of questions.

Here are some pictures:

  • Where does this spring attach to?
  • What got broken off here?
  • Is the corrosion around the head gasket an issue at this point?

Thanks!

The spring simply keeps tension on the plug leads.

There is an arm broken off which holds a "cup" per se at the end. The rubber grommet in the cowl fits snug against that cup to keep the cowl from banging around. There is an identical one on the opposite side.

Before doing anything, check the compression.

Don't you even think of parting that fine old motor out. If you don't want it, somebody else does. You can make a nice profit if you just turn it around and resell it as is. Besides, it looks pretty good except for the broken head.

Sorry what I meant was I could recover my cost by just selling the tank - but it wouldn't even be worth the time to sell it as $25 is nothing for a hobby.

I would never part out the motor itself - I love 'em. I also have a '56 'rude 10 hp (which you can see peeking from behind in the first pic) and a '58 18 hp Johnson that someone else lovely restored so I already have a couple of original tanks.

Thanks for the replies I will do a compression test tomorrow and report back.

This is my first solo project.

It is amazing how quickly word spread when people learned that I collect antique outboards. Place ads in your local paper/craigslist, etc...

I have 2 rooms in my basement full of motors, alot that I got for free or under $50. Many are simply parts motors, or in need of complete overhauls, but still many good motors. Doesnt count the rows of motors that are good runners in the shop.

I have found the best way to get an assortment of motors is to go to the aomci meets. There are usually plenty of value motors that can be afforded by all, of any income bracket. Also a great source of valuable information.

Just the other day I aquired a 71 18hp Evinrude for $25 that the owner told me was scrap metal. It had low compression on one cylinder, and was only running on one cylinder. Little seafoam, and a new head gasket solved the low compression. Adjusting the points had the cylinders sparking like lightning. $25 investment and an hour of my time turned into a great running workhorse that goes for a couple hundred bucks in my area. I wonder if he has any more "junk" motors for sale :)
