well i have a 72 arrowglass viper with a mercruiser 140 the good news is it started but I have some problems.I ran it with the muffs on and the tempature guage never went above 150, but I didn't see no water coming out of the drive where does the water come out at,and my other problem is when I shifted it into gear with just a little throttle I could hear like sounded like a flapping or smacking sound coming from the drive but when I gave it alittle more throttle it went away what could this sound be?

You didn't see any water coming out of the transom shield or the prop?
Did you look in the bilge?
When was the last time the boat was run?...JK

Re: 1st time boat started

Youy burned out the pump and overheated the motor. The noise you'e hearing is the flapper valve broken off and flopping around in the exhaust pipe (sometimes they work their way back to the drive). That pobably happened when the pump burned out, but age breaks them off too when the rubber gets hard and cracks. It's also possible that the piece is blocking the exhaust and retaining heat, but I'm betting on the first scenario. That wouldn't happen on muffs unless you ran it a long time. It probably happened on your last outing.

no the bilge is clear and I couldn't really tell if any water was coming out of the prop cause water was coming down from the muffs into the prop then the exhaust blowing it...the boat was last ran less than a year ago..and how did it overheat if the tempature didn't go over 150.

the flap sound could very well the an exhaust flap the has disintergrated. the temp question check if thermostat is stuck open.

ok I will do that the thing is I only hear the flapping when I put it in gear reverse or foward but not at idle and far as the water exhaust goes I didn't know water came from the 2 holes at the bottom of the transom shield I'm going to check the thermostat and probably fire it up again for a sec to check..I also have a cap I can unscrew inline after the thermostat I looked in and seen water so I think water is getting in.

you've got a close engine cooling system, also known as freshwater cooling. similar to a auto radiator. it recirculates just like a car. the impeller cools the outdrive and i think the exhaust. if you hear the flapping when only in gear it think you have an outdrive problem, clutch dog?

i don't think it's a closed system cause I can see a tube for water going to the outdrive I checked the thermostat and its all rusty along with the housing.

I've decided to replace the thermostat and pull the lower unit and check the impeller and replace it if needed...thanks for the help

What I'm reading here says that your cooling system is Fine........

Could your Flapping sound be call a Clicking, or Slight Knocking sound,..???.......

If it's coming from the Drive,........
It Could Be,.... The Dog Clutch clicking on itself,.... Neutral Isn't Centered,+ it's dragging on a Gear.....
I'm going to Guess that your Lower Shift Cable is on it's Way Out,+ Maybe, Possibly it could be Adjusted 1 last time,.....
Maybe Not,+ Replacement is Due........

Re: 1st time boat started

I think it is pumping water but I do not see no water exhaust there is no water coming out of the 2 holes in the transom isn't that where it's supposed to come out?and how long should it take for the exhaust water to come out instantly or do I have to wait for the thermostat to open? the best way bondo I can explain the sound is a smacking I was thinking to the shift cable could be it not shifting all the way cause when I move the control just a little foward it goes away it does this in reverse and in forward.

Re: 1st time boat started

you have something blocking your exhaust for sure...the water should come out both holes under the transom straight away and also out through the prop...try taking off the riser coming up off the manifold and check it for blockages also while you are doing that check the bull horn leading down from the riser to the transom for any blockages as sediment can stuff these areas, its definitley not a closed system!!,you can also run a solution through your cooling system that will clear all build up of sediments, have done this before and has made a huge improvement..

Ok I'll check the riser and bullhorn cause I'm definitely not getting water circulation.I think I might be getting water in but not out..

Re: 1st time boat started

would it hurt if I took a water hose and put in the manifold to flush it and see if water comes out of the exhaust holes in back?

Just curious....where do you think this water is going?
Some 6th dimension?

Re: 1st time boat started

it doesn't have to go nowhere it's blocked somewhere. when I said I have water coming in it means that the impeller is working supplying water but It can only supply water until it's full and can't go past the blockage, and as far as the water going out I have no water coming through the transom shield or propeller only exhaust so their is a blockage somewhere that's why I wanted to know if it was ok to flush the system with a hose.

Yes,.... Go Ahead.... Preferably, Backwards....

My Guess is it's Probably the Riser that's Plugged........That's Where the water Leaves the System........
And,.... The Only Way you're going to Find That is by Removing it.......It Won't Flush Out.........

Re: 1st time boat started

well just figure I'd give an update incase somebody has the same problem. I finally quit being lazy and dropped the lower unit and found the impeller burned and deformed also the pump housing was in bad shape too.I ordered a water pump kit so hopefully that should take care of the overheating problem.
"burned and deformed" more like totally toasted.
someone may have started the motor without the hose connected.
