1st off let me tell you I am new here & the boating world, sure I've been with several people on their boats, but I just got back from my 1st ever with my own boat. Lets say there is alot you DO NOT realize when you're NOT in the drivers seat! Fun but was a big learning experience of what goes on.

All-in-all I'd say a positive for a 1st time out with an older neglected boat, I did ALOT of prep work ahead of time on the actual boat, full scrubbing, everywhere, de-oxidizer, & waxing, & a completely new wiring job for the boat, NOT the main harness from the throttle to the outboard, seemed to pay off for the most part, didn't use the trolling motor back up, oars, other battery, or extra gas can, (have to still fix the gas gauge & voltmeter), so I'd say great for a 1st time.

I have new to me acquired a 1982 Glastron 16ft 6-seater, I know NOT the bast & greatest but it was one of those couldn't pass up deals for a actual running boat, & was fitted with a Mercury 115 2-cycle motor.

Anyway I won't bore you with anymore details just wanted to intro myself even though my user ID is spelled wrong, (I can't find how to fix that), and I'll apologize in advance for what will probably be some pretty basic questions, although I've searched this site & the internet answering MOST of my own questions, gotta LOVE the internet!

Welcome to iboats. Dont worry about asking any type of question here. There are alot of very nice non-judgemental people here willing to share some advice. Being a new captain it might be a good idea to take a boaters saftey class, as you mentioned things are alot different at the helm, be great to have another educated boater on the water. Hope you have a great summer on the lake.

Welcome aboard, congratulations! Now, go have some fun and report back so we can get a good laugh (we've all been there before). You got questions - we got answers (and lots of opinions!)

You have definately came to the right place. The guys on this forum are knowledgable and very helpful. I doubt there is a question you can ask that someone here can't answer. Tashasdaddy is right. The safe boating course is a good thing to have. Welcome aboard, have fun out there and be safe!

Welcome to the forum! A 16' with a 115 sounds like a pretty good boat to me. Good luck with it. (and we like pictures)

Re: 1st timer here

Thanks to ALL for the welcome,

I hear you on the paranoid feelings, I sooo just wanted the put up a flag on the boat that only said: "1st time out" that would explain ALOT to all the people who were flying by me looking like "whats wrong with his boat" LOL!

But I DID learn ALOT as far as only a first time out, & I am one of those who listen to others mistakes & TRY to learn what I can, which exblains why before I went out for the 1st time I made sure I took, 2-oars, 2-batteries, an extra 2-gal of gas, (my gas gauge does not currently work), a bilge pump, & a trolling motor. All this due to the stories I have read on here & heard from boating friends, all in all made for a good 1st time out!

Hows that for a paranoid 1st timer!LOL!

My friends told me the boating world is like the jeeping world, (which I have plenty of experience with, actually planning a hydroboost 3/4 ton brake system for the brakes so I can pull the boat with my 1982 Jeep Scrambler), for the most part there are plenty of people willing to help.

I did take a basic safety course on-line before even getting in the water, was a good start for sure.

Oh & the first funny rookie story for your entertainment is posted in the Mercury outboard section, I haven't tested my theory but I'm pretty sure its ALL about being a rookie, NOT a motor problem, after reading more about what is going on, might give you a laugh at least!

thanks,
Rich
