just bought a 86 bayliner with a 2.1 volvo, 270 penta just need to do a reg tune up on it. not sure what the best fluids are or what is just say suitable from like a normal parts store. i was told i could go to a local car parts store and get a cap, rotor, points for some kind of chevy or something and it is exact same just a whole lot cheaper. anyone here of that ?

You can get many of the tune up parts at napa, they can order Seirra brand parts. However I have found their prices to be higher than the aftermarket parts available on Iboats.

Iboats also has OEM Volvo Penta parts that may not be available in the aftermarket section AND tend to be better Quality and fit in my opinion.

Tune up parts are expensive for those motors AQ125b.

Good luck with it.

Let us know if you need any help.:)

Tag should be on the engine right where the starter bolts on to the block. Took me a while to find mine.

Re: 2.1 volvo aq125 tune up ?

never heard of fluids on a tune up.

But...Use a good motor oil in the engine. usually a 10-40 or 20-50 depending on local climate.

Any oil filter.

Normally tune ups are done in spring when you bring the boat out for the season and lube services are done during winterization.

The only part that needs to be marine on the tune up is the cap. The rotor and points are same as auto.

Be sure to check distributor cam for centrifugal advance and use the cam lube on the distributor cam to ensure the points don't wear and close.

im not sure if its a 125a or 125b

Tag should be there, Port side down low. If you can't find it, I would go with 125b until proven otherwise. You can always cross reference with the 125a parts numbers, I'll bet they're 95% the same.

Have a look at this site if you haven't already. Type aq125 in the "engine type" box, hit enter. You will see the a and b, click on one of them and see what happens.:)

First, your engine is based Volvo car engine and not a GM car engine. Chevy parts will not work.

Second, Seirra does not offer tune up parts for the Volvo AQ 125A or B. Get the parts from a Volvo Penta Dealer or online.

Third, Use Heavy Duty SAE 30 oil as volvo recommends for this engine. Not multi weight oil.

Dave the motor says sae 10w 40. the book says 10w 30 for or adiquate weight. and i am aware that volvo is not chevy but i was told by a old volvo owner he bought parts for like a vega or something and they were the same for the distributer parts and they were wicked cheap thats the only reason i asked if anybody else heard of that because im new to marine, 1st boat.

Change the oil as part of winterization. Among other benefits, you'll be getting rid of any water and minimize the time spent in contact with motor and outdrive components.

Yes, definitly not a GM engine.

I just checked the aftermarket VP parts and Seirra has all the ignition parts for the AQ125B. Not sure where you're looking.

I agree with running straight 30. Volvo has changed its mind on oil recommendations once or twice. I do believe that just about any motor oil would work just fine.

Have a look at these posts by Don S about winterizing and summerizing.

Don S has forgotten more about boats than most of us will ever know. When in doubt, do as Don says.:)
