Re: 2.3 cobra

Could be a lot of things.
Carb accelerator pump, water in fuel, does it die when you give it gas or first put it into gear (ie. will it idle in gear?).
May also just be in need of a tuneup,
Since it's new to you, if you have no records of when anything was done, you need to go thru everything so you have a base of where to start on anything. Full tuneup, oil change, all filters, gear lube change, impeller change, pull the drive and check the bellows, ujoints, gimbal bearing, alignment, etc. just to name a FEW of the things.
You are also going to need the OEM service manuals for your engine and drive.

Re: 2.3 cobra

ok here we go. i bought this from my boss for 1500. it was jumping in gear.took the stearn drive apart and all the gears were fine.so i figure it must be a ajustment.went to the lake.to try it after ajusting by the manual and thats when it started to die when i gave it gas.looked at points they look fine.i did put it in gear and was able to go at a idle. but not run if i pushed gas.it would pop and die it did set for 3 years. i put fresh gas in it. please help.

You need to be more specific on what u adjusted. If it's been sitting for 3 yrs. you need a complete tuneup as Don said. And u can't look at points to see if there ok or not. They have to be checked with a feeler gauge or dwell meter. But, don't bother. Replace them. And don't buy a cheap set for $1.99. Go to NAPA for a good set, & then set the timing after u change the points. I would also change dist. cap, condensor, rotor, plugs, & fuel filters.

After sitting for 3 years, some of the passages in the carb are probably plugged up. It needs to be tore down, soaked in carb cleaner, and the passages blowed out with compressed air and a new carb kit installed. (No, spraying carb cleaner in the throat of the carb won't work)
New gas in the tank will also not help.

Also hooking up a portable gas tank would be a good test to make sure the built in tank is not the problem..could be full of water,rust,ect..and may have already plugged up the carb...
