It could be one of 2 things, lean sneeze (not enough fuel) or, timings off. Pump the gas with the engine off, and look down into the carb, to see if you've got gas squirting in?

I just replaced a timing belt on my 2.3. Its a 30 minute job. Make sure the crank has number 1 at TDC. Set it to the mark. Set the cam to the mark. Set the distributer rotor to number 1. Put the belt on. Turn the crank 2 full cycles and check your marks. Start it up and check the timing. Expect something to be off a tooth, and to tear it down at least once. It really is an easy job. One of the benefits of a 2.3 is that all sorts of parts are readily available. From stock to high performance you can get everything you need. Also a 2.3 is extremely simple and easy to work on. PM me for details on the timing belt. My local auto parts store had the belt in stock. It came with good instructions. Google and youtube will show all kinds of videos and photo essays on a replacement.

What did you use to hold the tensioner spring back?

Make sure you loosen both bolts on the tensioner. I used a small prybar to pry against spring tension. Retighten the bolt on the slider to hold the tensioner while you work. Make sure you pull the distrubuter cap and mark the rotor position before taking tension off the belt. I didn't and I bumper the auxillury shaft. There is not much resistance on it and its really easy to move. When I reassembled the timing was off by quite a few degrees. I had to tear it down to move the gear one tooth. Even thought it was way off, the boat started and idled just fine. The timing light told another story.
