I have searched this forum and cannot find the specific answer to my question. I have 2-4-C Teflon grease for prop shaft and Gimbal bearing/U-joint grease. Can either of these grease be used to fill the trailer bearing buddies?

grease is cheap. Why not get the proper marine wheel bearing grease.

In the TRAILER section, you will see where it is universally reccommended that you not mix grease types in your wheel bearings. What you have there is most likely ok as it is water proof. But you should remove and clean your bearings and repack with the fresh grease.

I dont think the grease you mention is hi-temp.You must have hi-temp waterproof coroision control grease. If it is the only grease you have on hand and need to use your trailer right away then by all means use it.It is better than no grease but it is certainly better to use the correct grease for the long haul(no pun intended) Charlie

Wheel bearing grease is about the cheapest you can buy. Don't waste the 2-4-C on wheel bearings, it'll come out when the wheels heat up. $3 will get you enough bearing grease for a longer while.

Dont waist your money on the Teflon grease. Teflon actually has "squared corners/edges and really is not used anymore. Several years ago the advertisments pushed the oils/greases with teflon. Teflon does absolutely nothing inside your engine/bearings. Teflon must be heated up to about 800 deg. F to get it to stick to anything for friction reducing purposes.

Re: 2-4-C Lubricant

I was told at Merc school NOT to use 24C on bearings, even though it says to right on the tube and in the literature. The Teflon in there is in tiny microscopic strands which can cause needles and rollers to slide rather than roll and form flat spots. It was originally adopted to replace all of the greases used. But apparently problems arose and they still offer gimbal bearing/u-joint grease, spline grease, and Special 101.

As for wheel bearings, I highly recommend regular axle grease. I used to use special water repellant synthetic marine trailer bearing greases, but noticed a much higher tendency to cause rust. Water that gets in there stays as small droplets which will rust the bearings. With good old cheap axle grease, the water will mix into the grease and therefore not cause rust nearly as quickly.

Several years ago the advertisements pushed the oils/greases with teflon. Teflon does absolutely nothing inside your engine/bearings

The best I can remember Dupont was sued when they tried to stop selling "Teflon" to the companies that was using their name in their oil and grease ads. Some thing to the effect that Dupont had done tests and did not agree with their claims.
There are a lot of brands claiming water resistant but they break down at high temperature.
If salt water get in you are definitely going to have rust.

i dunk my trailer in salt and fresh about 50/50 and the only thing i worry about is if the trailer has brakes i use a bearing grease rated for the higher temp that brakes bring the hubs up to
the bearing buddies if used correctly will not allow water to enter a hub because they keep a positve pressure in the hub

on my land based job every thing gets high pressure hosed down 10 times or more a day and if the right amount of grease is in there then water really cannot enter
and i have not seen any good brand of grease that milks out like oil does

tommays
