Quick question. When replacing water pump in my Merc 888, where it says to use 2-4-c on seals and pump housing, splines, ect. is that all you can use or can you use the 80/90 gear oil that I will be using in drive? Disassembling now and need to know before stores close.

What's wrong with using what is recommended? Grease lasts longer than oil.

Thanks Don, I had read somewhere that either was ok but I can't find anyone around here to really explain to me what 2-4-c was until now. Off to the store. Your help on these threads has been great and I look forward to getting this baby in the water in a few days and posting pictures. It has been stored over 7 years!
