The leak is when looking at the engine on the boat its on the right side of the motor (the side with the carb.) It seems to be leaking from the gasket. Since water flows through this I am guessing its the exaust manifold . Am I wrong? Please dont make fun of me this is why I am here looking for help.

Its the manifold I am pretty sure. Its leaking from the bottom so I think from looking in it with a highpowered flashlight. I just got this motor running for the first time in 4 yrs and its purring like a kitten. No overheating.. SO I am pretty sure this has to be a minor speed bump.

Anyone have any advice and special instructions that may help me.

Also can I use regular 2.5 L gaskets or do I need a special marine gasket?

ahh just noticed the pic didnt come in. 1982 OMC 4cl 2.5L raw cooling system. When I hooked up the muffs and started the motor a light water leak was seen on the right side of the engine near the top where the manifold attaches to the engine.

You want a Fel-Pro seires 17400 gasket, you should be able to get it from any NAPA store. (May have to order it for you.)

Thanks soo much I am sooo happy this project I bought is almost done!!! I appreciate the advice and will order this right away!!! Any special things I need to know? I didnt see the torque procedure in the manual. Any help is appreciated.

The problem is, on those engines there is NO transfer of water between head and manifold, so a new gasket will fix nothing!

sounds like a typical cracked manifold from water freezing in it over the winter
without a pic, there is no way of doing anything but guessing

they usually crack lengthwise with the crack crossing the drain **** threaded hole

Ok why is the waterpump hose attached to this manifold then? if this is true your telling me this is incorrect. I beg to differ that water does pass through..

the water goes into the manifold, combines with the exhaust in the Riser/Elbow then down and out.

What I think the post said was there is no transfer of Water from the engine cylinder head to the intake manifold at the point that we think you are talking about. ( where the intake bolts to the cylinder head )

Those manifolds can crack along the inside edge ( between the cyl head and int/exh manifold) but your problem can also be a cracked block ( you wouldn't necessarily have water in the oil and the engine can run great).

The only way to tell sometimes is to take of the int/exh manifold.

The cracks on these engines can sometimes be repaired with JB Weld and last a LONG TIME..

ps.. people here dont make fun of first timers.

Welcome.

Just a thought....

On that engine i believe there is a drain screw close to where you are describing - these can corrode and dribble out from there - like a wingnut fitting under manifold

you never know :)

Yeah took the alt off , inspected all and found it is leaking right where the manifold attaches to the block on the bottom, the manifold is not cracked on the bottom or top but I understand how they can crack on the inside.
No water in the oil checked out good.
No crack in the block things been stored indoors for yrs.
Took a stick of Quick steel and patched over it problem solved.
I just didnt want to gamble with having to take off a manifold, snapping a bolt, breaking something. This was best fix plus with the heat coming off that sucker the steel will make great bond. also out of sight out of mind too. Win win for me.
