I have a 1980 2.5 mercruizer (chevy) inboard. I removed the fuel pump from the block to replace a slow leaking gasket where it bolts on. I replaced it and now it will not start. should there be fuel flowing in the clear plastic hose to the carb? or the metal line to the carb or both? How does the fuel pump work? What does the metal tab do that slides inside the block? please excuse my lack of knowledge for I am more of a auto/motocycle weekend mechanic. any help or suggestions will be most appreciated! thanks -adam

Re: 2.5 mercruizer fuel pump question.

The Clear line is just an Indicator for a Leaking Diapharm.....
Only the Metal line should be carrying Fuel.....
If there's Fuel in the Clear line,... The Pump is Junk....

The metal Tab rides on the Cam, or Cam Follower,+ Actuates the Pump.....

thanks for the info. my next question is can the fuel pump be installed wrong or is it a no brainer? I was wondering if the tab rides below, on the side or on top of the cam. thanks again!

Well,....................... AnyThing is Possible.........

And,....
What I consider a No Brainer,......
And You consider a No Brainer,.....
Is probably Awhole Lot Different,........d:)

I'm not Sure,... But I believe that the Pump's Arm rides on the bottom of the cam,...

usually the arm on the pump runs under the lobe...
you should see wear on the arm of the old pump.
and yes the pump can bolt up with the arm in the wrong location.
