If I hook 2-12 volt batteries, positive to positive and negative to negative, I should be able to run my 12 volt trolling motor with longer battery life. Is this accurate, because I know for 24 volt it's positive to negative on batteries to get 24 volts.

yep, parallel wiring is double capacity at 12 volts, assuming you have two batteries that are the same.

you should only do this if the two batteries are identical size, type and age. otherwise they aren't going to last very long. if you want to use two different types of batteries in parallel you need a switch and some charging circuit that will charge them separately, look at blue sea add a battery kit

It is not necessary to have both batteries identical in size and capacity. Ideal -- yes, but not necessary. One weak battery in the system will draw down the other battery until they equalize. It is always best to start with two new identical batteries however.
