I have a 1980 Johnson 70 HP Seahorse engine. I have always put the same brand of TCW-III oil into my engines. Nothing bad has happened so far.

My question is whether or not it is worth the price to put synthetic oil in from now on? I just bought this boat and need the Johnson to last a few years until I can upgrade to a 90 HP engine. Any thoughts/tips would be appreciated.

Searun1

I'm going to step out on a limb here.....If you have no problems with the oil you are using now, don't change a thing.

I have to agree with walleyehed. If it has worked well for years, stick with it..

Your opinion reflects my own. I am tempted to use synthetic because of all the good things I hear about it. BUT, my motors have all given excellent service and dependability on good old OMC TCW -whatever for many, many years. A '72, an '84 and a '91 all still running like champs. Maybe I'm old fashioned, but Hey!- if it works, it works.

I have used the Wallytech oil, and switched to the Penzoil synthetic blend. Motor (69 Merc 1250)performed fine on the Wallytech oil, and the only real difference I have noticed with the synthetic blend is less smoke, which is just fine by me.

I've been using castrol syntech 2-stroke oil, seems to smoke less and not fowl as much when trolling.

But cost isnt really a factor with a 9.8hp motor as they use so little feul.
