I'm about to become the owner of a 50's 2HP Elgin outboard. I'm wondering if I should use weed-whacker oil or TCW3 outboard oil. It's air cooled which leads me to believe air cooled oil would be better. Anybody care to comment?

Aeronutt,Use tcw3 oil, 2 stroke oil is 2 stroke oil.Do you have model and serial numbers for this motor. Are you sure it is from the 50s I dont recall an air cooled Elgin from the 50s.

Re: 2 HP Air Cooled Elgin oil

Just surfing along and found this post, I know it's dead but I can't leave it like that. TCW3 "2 cycle water cooled", if you have an "air cooled" engine you would be better off using a quality two stroke oil designed for "air cooled" engines, unless manufacturer says different. TCW3 will work, but not the best option for an air cooled engine. 2 stroke's are not all the same, my outboards get tcw3, my lawn equipment get air cooled oil. More than anything it's the running temperature differences.
