My 1982 (not '81 as typed in previous post) Johnson 2HP starts up pretty easy but when I gave it gas it would die. The only place it would run is when the lever is pointing at "Start". I posted this question on June 21 and got a response about the carbs, which was my thought too. Since then I have taken the carbs apart, cleaned them and it still does the same thing. The first time I tried to use it this year was on a hot day on a farm pond in a jon boat. Now I have it in my garage in a trash can full of water. Now I think my problem might be electrical. Is that possible? and if so where should I start? Also, I bought a clymers manual. It primarily addresess starting and fuel problems. I have found out it also dies when you try to run it slow.

I'm certainly no expert....but it seems to me that your problem might also be caused by an air leak in the fuel system. I'd check all the connections and fuel lines for cracking before giving up on the fuel delivery side of things.

Is the vent working on your gas tank. Try running with the cap off the tank to check this out.

Good luck!

I have changed and put new clamps on the line. I have not tried running it without the cap off but I did make sure the cap vent was open and clear. The reason I think it might be electrical now is it doesn't sputter at all when you give it gas. It dies immediately.

Are you losing spark or fuel?

Got a timing light? Inductive type?

This will tell you if the spark goes away. You'll need a 12 volt battery nearby.

Can you elaborate some more? I have an old auto timing light that I have used in the past on my 14 HP motor. I'm not sure what you mean by Inductive Type. I wouldn't know how to hook it up on this motor.

Hi MJK,
Inductive type timing lights use a sensor that is placed over the plug wire to pick up electrical pulses as they travel through the wire. Hook up the power wires to a battery, put the sensor over the wire and fire it up. It'll tell you in a hurry if that's your problem....
- Scott

I may be getting ahead of myself, but I won't be able to post questions until next week and I would like to work on the motor this weekend. So, if I am not getting any spark, where would I go from there? Remove flywheel and check points and condensor?

If your spark goes away, it's something going on under the flywheel. Interference, short, etc.
