I just bought a used 1985 2 hp johnson outboard that started right up and ran fine when i bought it. But after getting it home it started once and while i was trying to familiarize myself with the throttle, high/low speed setting (bottom knob) and the choke it died and won't start. The top knob and needle valve were missing when i bought it but i was told that the adjustment was only necessary for adjusting for a change in altitude. It seems that the carb is flooding out because the few times out of the 500 plus pulls that it has almost turned over has been after sitting overnight and then with the fuel valve closed and the lower needle valve only half open but with the choke all the way out. I don't know if i should clean the carb or if i'm just doing everything completely wrong. I have tried to replace the fuel with a new batch 50:1 ratio that runs fine in my 40 hp and the vent cap is fully open. It seems to be getting fuel (possibly too much) and the spark is good. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
