I recently bought a boat with a 150 Johnson and it runs great. It really gets with it on this boat.
I wanted to check that I have the correct prop on the engine but my tach isn't working. I did what you guys said and ran the boat and a high idle for 20 minutes and then checked the voltage to the battery. I was reading 14+ volts so the charging system is working correctly. How do I check to see if the tach is faulty and if so, what kind of tach (how many poles) should I get and where would I get it?
My other question is about the speedo tube. I found where it hooks up to the leg of the engine but the nipple is broken off. How do I get the old broken nipple out. Also, I can't find the part number. Where would I get this part?

Thanks again. You guys are awesome.

Most Tach's have a switch on the back to make them work with different motors. The only real way to check is to swap it out. Iboats, boats dot net, Ebay.
Forget the old speedo connection and use a standard Pitot. They get blocked up anyway. If you insist on trying to get the old nipple out you may have to remove the lower unit and get at it from below.
Have the carbs been cleaned and the lower unit oil and Impeller replaced. A lot of good motors have fried because these items were not attended to.

Yes, I put new oil in the lower end and new impeller but I haven't cleaned the carbs. I'm in Arizona and the guy I bought it from has used it fairly regularly so the carbs haven't had a chance to get gummed up.

As for the speedo nipple on top of the g/c, just take a pick and dig it out. You can find the new part # at shop.evinrude.com. When you get it just press it in and hook up your speedo tube.

Using the motor does not guarantee the carbs are clean. If they are not stripped and thoroughly cleaned periodically you run the risk of loosing cylinders. Less expensive to be sure than to have to have the motor rebuilt.
