i know temp. effects the expansion of foam, also mixing mechanically is better, but does high humidity effect the expansion also?

Re: 2 part foam expansion and humidity

hi welcome to iboats!

not enough to be a major factor in any part of boat building bud.
the biggest thing is proper mixing.

mix fast with a drill......
every thing you use will be ruined.
correct measurement is also a major factor. make sure that you use equal parts of each component.
that will ensure your biggest bang for your buck.

cheers
oops

p.s. wear old clothes and rubber gloves.....it is very messy

I have been pouring some as well lately. Like oops said, mix properly, temp 80 or better, and its pretty easy. Wear gloves, I didn't and I never had anything that was so hard to get off my skin.

Re: 2 part foam expansion and humidity

thanks oops!, i just was a little disapointed in the expansion that i got last night(did that come out wrong!?). maybe i was expecting too much. i noticed it was MUCH better when i mixed it with a handheld cake mixer, a tip i believe i got from your hull extension thread:D stuff is just sooo expensive

Re: 2 part foam expansion and humidity

yeah....its freekin nasty expencive.
the most expencive single part of the restoration.

when you pour the part x into part y.....there is allways some left straggeling on the side of the pouring container......this will give you an uneven mix....and it will expand less...
try to calculate the amount left in the bucket, and subtract this from the volume of the mix that you are pouring into.

i hope this is clear.....

example.......part a is the amber colered stuff. part b is the brown stuff.
if you have a bucket of 500 ml or say a quart of the part a in a pail.....then you measure 500 ml or a quart of the brown part b.
after you pour in part b to part a....you will notice that the cup you poured part b from has quite a bit of solution still in it.....as much as 100 ml on 500....this is the gook that was on the side of the pot that took too long to drip in.

subtract the 100 mill from part a and keep measuring the 500 ml in the part b.....and you will get a much more even mix and the largest expansion possible

Re: 2 part foam expansion and humidity

actually i am pouring and mixing in the same container, i first pour part A , then add same amount of part B and get to mixing instantly with the mixer. I am experimenting on small pours to get the feel of it and it is in a quart pail from our car dealership bodyshop paint mixing cups. These cups are WELL marked in multiple ratios including 1:1 so no waste from the second cup, although i will keep that in mind when i do my final larger pours because 1 quart may not be large enough.

yes, right from the can, first part A, let it settle a bit, then part B to the 1:1 ratio marks and mix

I've done the foam a bunch....and you need three containers. Mark one Part A and one part B. Pour equal amounts of each into the cups A & B the pour them both into C. You'll need a new C cup each time but just use A and B over and over again. I wouldn't recommend pouring right from the containers....too big risk of improper ratio's, plus you loose some mixing time with the drill.

Re: 2 part foam expansion and humidity

thanks for the advice guys, i was doing very small pours experimenting(like 8 ounces total). I think I will use the 3 cup deal to do the rest, makes sense. I was hoping to get it all done with just the 2 one quart cans but it doesnt look like thats going to happen:(
