i need to test the vro pump on my 90hp johnson. i have found how to do it with a functional engine. unfortunately mine is far from that! the pump is my prime suspect at this point. just wondering if one of you fine gentlemen knew how i could test it without a running engine?

also i can not find a flywheel puller in this town. what else can be used to accomplish removal? thanks in advance!!

For the puller just get three washers and bolts that thread into the puller holes on the flywheel, and use those with any typical puller and voila (you should be able to get a flywheel/pulley puller kit at any auto parts store)

EDIT: If you can't find the center part of a flywheel puller kit with three holes, then I dunno....engine hoist and a mallet??

For the VRO, connect a fuel pressure gauge (has to be a low PSI gauge...eg 1-10psi in 1psi increments) between the VRO pump and the fuel rail. Crank the motor over and see what reading you get...your manual should specify proper fuel pump pressure, but it will be low. Since the VRO pump operates on crankcase pressure, you will get a reading even though the engine isn't starting.

As far as how to test if the oil side of the VRO is working, I have no idea (Im running VRO delete, premixing my gas)

You have to get a strong, substantial flywheel puller. The bolt size for the three that hold the puller to the wheel is 5/16-24 and should be grade 8.

You can't find one at an Autozone or Advance auto? You can put down a deposit and use it...take it back when done.
Check MAC Tools, SnapOn...etc.

Something like this...but as stout as possible.

Ebay if that doesn't work.

The VRO...you cannot bench test it. You cannot run it, because the cylinder that is bad on your motor is the cylinder that drives the pump.
The way to test is to have a good running motor, put 50:1 pre mix fuel in the tank, mark the oil tank with masking tape, and monitor your oil usage over maybe 25 gals of gas....you should use 1/2 gal of oil for 25 gals fuel burned. You will be double oiling for that 25 gals. After you are sure it is oiling right, you can go back to straight gas in the fuel tank.
