I noticed there is a big difference in price between
regular 2-stroke @ $3.29 a litre as compared to premium at $7.99 a litre.

i have always run the cheaper oil which has TC3-W in it. is there a huge difference in quality or performance ?

Thanks, and Merry Xmas !

Re: 2-STROKE OIL

the brand is generic, (mastercraft from canadian tire)
As long as it is outboard rated with tc3-w, why pay twice the price ?
do you get less smoke?, better burn?

Re: 2-STROKE OIL

TCW3 is not an addative. Its a standard. Some oils exceed the standard, some dont. Unfortunately there isnt an easy way to know if a certian oil exceeds the standard without experience with the oil.

After years of testing and rebiulding outboards we use Pennzoil Blend as our standard oil for carb'd outboards. Its very readily available and relatively inexpensive ($10.00 or less a gallon). An excellent outboard oil.

C-RAVEN
the diferences is tcw3 rated oils is very minor at best, and higher price don't necessarily mean better. Take it from someone like Dhadley to give you some good advice...just a thought :)

My take is the more money you spend on the boat ya have, the less you will have for the next one. The old 2 strokes are still running fine, and the water cooling corrosion does them in before the oil will. JMHO

Re: 2-STROKE OIL

There is a difference in what oil you use, but it depends on your engine. If it is still under warranty I have always recommended using the oil offered by the engine manufacturer in case there is ever a warranty problem, then the manufacturer cannot blame you for using a different oil. If you have an older carb engine just make sure you are using TC-W3 oil, most brands will do just fine.
Some of the new oils, however, are part or fully synthetic oils which are more expensive, but do offer benefits to your engine.
You can set up the new Evinrude E-Tec, for example, to run on their XD-100 fully synthetic oil. It is more expensive, but you will get more that twice the life out of a tank of oil. INthe neighborhood of 50+ hours under regular use for one tank.
Hope this helps!

Merry Christmas

Spend more on oil then you can't afford to visit the tavern to pick up the barflies, er, I mean chicks... :D
Kind of a "catch 22", huh, Mikey

Supertech up north of the border (or south, depending on where you're at) is not the same as the US stuff. We get Tech 2000 or something from Walmart with a little maple leaf on it, which might be Shell Nauticus.

That said, you didn't spring for "MotoMaster Forumla 1 Premium" TC-W3? Cmon, it's like 70c more than the cheapo stuff and on the shelf right next to it. And it comes in a bottle with a sight glass on the side. :D

phatmanmike - are you saying chicks don't dig cheapskates?? :)

Re: 2-STROKE OIL

I used to run Motomaster TCW-3 in my '72 50 hp 'rude. When I purchased a new boat/motor 90 hp '03 Merc, I ran only the Merc oil.

There really was no other choice. Buy Motomaster or Merc oil. There was nothing else available (some castrol at Home Hardware, shell at C-Tire etc.).

So I would unhappily dish out on sale $40 plus dollars for a gallon (4 litres of oil) at C-Tire.

Well now. Bass Pro just opened up 30 minutes from home.

Penzoil is $15 per gallon! They have other oils to. Welcome to the free market economy!

I've stockpiled enough Merc oil for another season but have already purchased LU oil for $3 per bottle.

Conclusion:

I'm really happy Bass Pro is here!!!!

Iboats moderator:

Maybe it's time iboats went retail in Canada!
