Oh no Spring is here and so are the oil threads !!!
Any TCW-3 rated oil is fine. Synthetic or not is a personal preference.
Personally I use the Wal Mart brand with no issues.

Oil is oil----just use anything in that old of a motor

an old engine needs to be treated right just as much as a new one..... I personally LOVE amsoil 100:1 mix but as long as you use the proper 2 stroke oil you will be fine

btw 4 liters is 1.0571875 gallons for our northern friends :D

Unless you are from way up north in which one gallon = 1.201 imperial gallons (at least according to the chart I referenced).

Cheap Walmart oils like Penzoil and the like are made from parafin based oils and as such will add to the carbon deposits in the combustion chamber.

Why skimp on something that makes your internals work?

A Good oil is way better. Merc, Yamalube, OMC or the like are more costly but well worth the price. Unless you are gonna decarbon twice a year.

Oh no! Another oil thread ! With the same absolute BS being thrown about! Do ya really think that Mercury Marine, Yamaha, and BRP actually have their own little oil factories? If we were discussing the pros and cons of synthetic vs dino-based oil that would be one thing, but discussing the merits of one TCW-3 oil versus another based on pure marketing hype is pointless. Unless we're discussing cold, hard verifiable data rather then espousing one's personal belief system it will become just another one of dozens of oil threads. Locked.

Re: 2 stroke oil

There is no "right" answer as to what type or brand of TCW-3 oil is used. Decarbing should be part of routine maintenance anyway. Personally I decarb way before I think it really needs it and it would make no difference whether I was using synthetic or dino based.
Maintenance is so much better to do than repairs.
My final 2 cents on this thread.

Of course they don't. There are a lot of companies that don't actually manufacture anything - they just buy it from a supplier that private labels it for them.

But, on the other hand, don't you think that Mercury,... writes the specific specs by which the oil is to be made to?

TCW-3 in a minimum specification. If additives are included to help reduce carbon deposits, it will still meet he spec. But of course, that increases the price as well.

First of all, the jury is out I think on if the cheaper oils add carbon deposits. Secondly, if they do and you decarb twice a year you still come out better going the cheap brand. Last time i checked the "good oil" was upwards of $28 per gallon. I paid $11.90 for the Walmart Super tech and will do so for some time

That is an amazing deal for here in canada. Buy all you can.

I just bought a 4 litre (1 gallon) jug of a generic brand oil for 19.99. It's tcw3 and NMMA certified. That is the cheapest option for me. Option #2 is Shell premium 2-cycle at 29.99/gallon and finally penzoil or amsoil at 39.99/gallon.

Add the ridiculous 12% tax we pay and it makes a lot of sense to me to use the generic dino oil and spend 15 bucks on a decard every 6 months!

cheers~!
