This should probably be posted somewhere else but here goes. I have an eratic miss with my 2000 50hp mercury. last ni9ght I decided to pull the fuel pump and carbs to check them out. I pulled the 2 stroke oil tank off the engine, wondering if i should keep the oil or not I decided to dump it, while draining it into an oil bucket, it was draining so slow that I opened the cap to vent it better, to drain faster. I looked inside the tank and the strong smell of ammonia bout knocked me on my *****. I opened a new container of Merc 2 stroke oil and while that smell is there it is no where near as strong as the engines oil tank. Question does this oil have a shelf live once opened and put in the engines oil tank. I have been using 2 stroke oil since the late 70's in chain saws but of course that does sit around long, we can go through 2-3 gllons or more per day, so I have never thought about how long it is good for.

Re: 2 Stroke oil

Looks as if I found my anwser:

"However, you shouldn?t leave oil in your oil tank for more than a year without use. Under these circumstances, the oil can solidify and become quite gelatinous. When the engine is started with this kind of oil inside of it, it can cause serious damage."

The oil is more thicker in the bottom of the oil tank. Time to bleed the oil injection system
