If I were to upgrade, should I get a 2-stroke or 4-Stroke?

Opinions, Comments?

I want Speed, Efficiency, and reliability - I know I'm not asking much
Get a new direct injected 2 stroke. Better fuel economy, as good if not better emissions, lighter weight. 4 strokes are fine, but the new 2 strokes are superior...
Brother bought a new 4stroke merc. it is verry smoth running and quite. I thas good performance all +s but on the neg. side the darn thing weighs more than my 50 hp johnson. lwr
"Speed, Efficiency, and reliability"?

You will meet this criteria with either the 4-strokes or the new injected 2-strokes. Neither one is superior to the other. They each have pros and cons, but both are fine.

Find the one that will have the best dealer support and pricing, or use other criteria that is unique to yourself.
a better question would be maitain it or not. both will die a painful death without it. 90% of all the repairs I do are lack of maint related.
good thing maytag does not build an outboard I guess.
Though i'm hardly a pro it seem to me that 2 strokes are considerably lighter for the Horse power, and cheaper; however, some lakes where i live are requiring 4 stroke as of january 1st, so if you by a brand new 2 stroke for sking on a local lake you could be in for a dissapointment, check with your laws before you drop a couple grand on something that may not even be legal on your lake in a year or two
I will repeat what everyone else has said...

You can't go wrong with a DFI 2 stroke or 4 stroke for efficiency and reliability.

4 strokes weight alot more, so if your scuppers are close to the waterline already this is something to consider. I think suziki 4 strokes are the lightest, then yahama.

2 strokes are lighter and more responsive to the throttle (i.e 2 stroke to 1 power stroke every rev. of the crank while the 4 stroke does 1 power stroke every 2 revs of the crank). Thus four stokes don't exhibit that "burst" of power when you jam the throttle.

But all in all, like rodbolt said, you got take care of the damm thing. They will both be horrible engines if you don't keep up on the maintainance. Keep up on that and I'm sure you will get a long life and enjoyment out of either engine.
