2-stroke to 4-stroke converts

This past weekend, the guy next door came over and asked me not to idle our 2-stroke outboard at the dock as he "doesn't like the smoke." Just a few years ago, he was running a 2-stroke outboard and has since converted to a
4-stroke. He now looks down on 2-strokes and their owners now that he has "gone green." Has anyone experienced this as well??

Oh man.
I'd be buying some of those mosquito torches and loading them up with tcw3.

If I were you I'd go pick up some Seafoam and show him some real smoke:p:D

This is still a free country last time I checked.

Pretty rude thing to say in my opinion. It's not like 4-strokes are cheap:rolleyes:

Tell him you were running motor to try and get rid of mosquitoes breeding under his dock! Let me guess, "Old retiree has nothing better to do than complain about neighbor's 2 stroke smoke"....Tell him to go get a life somewhere!...

Re: 2-stroke to 4-stroke converts

I've not heard the green thing before, but 90% of everyone I know are now running 4 strokes, 150 HP and up. Not one of them has anything bad to say about them. Most if not all say they will never go back to a two stroke. The only thing they tease me about is my poor fuel mileage, 2 stroke induced lung cancer and how bad two stroke oil is biting into my beer money.

FWIW: I'm surprised they have not banned 2 stroke at more places. On a busy afternnon at the docks, you end up with an oil ring at the water line. You can stand behind any 2 stroke and watch the oil and fuel hit the top of the waterwater. Surprised DNR isn't ticketing for fuel spills...yet.

Trust me........I wanted to tell him to go mind his own _ _ _ _ ing business......but I was a guest of my in-laws, so that wouldn't have gone over well. The rudest part about it is the guy doesn't even remember my name, or have the decency to say "I'm really sorry but I don't recall your name." We've been acquaintances for the past 6 years. I even dove in the lake to help him find his mooring anchor the first time we met. I doubt I'll go out of my way to help him anytime soon.

Just switch to a smokeless synthetic oil. Simple solution to a complex problem.

And make sure your mixture is correct. If your engine is made to run at 32:1 - 40:1, it may be smoking unnessarily heavy if it's pumping at 20:1.

I do not know much about outboards but, my2 stroke 2003 Evinrude does not smoke. and it is pretty fuel efficient. and I also know that the enviromentals in California were running some 2 stroke E-techs on the lakes.

Re: 2-stroke to 4-stroke converts

Now it appears we're getting into a technical issue. I have a 1999 Merc 150 EFI. Does this motor run at 50:1 all the time or does it lean out the oil mixture at lower RPMs? Thanks. I'm using what Mercury recommended for this motor: Quicksilver Premium Plus.

The guy has been watching "Waterworld" with Kevin Costner and hates the "Smokers"......

The guy must've not had his cup of coffee that morning. THat's pretty darned crodgety in my opinion! At my lake during duck season, the dock has huge numbers of 2-strokes unloading. I've never seen the oil slick as describe above. Either way, my personal opinion is the oil does break down over time. It is, after all, just plant material that's been exposed to heat and pressure. I really doubt dino oil is that much less biodegradeable than the synthetic oil. Not to start some arguement, I just don't see the oil problem. Then again, I don't have beautiful clear water lakes like some of you guys up North. If I did and the 2-strokes were dirtying the water up, I'd feel differently. I will admit that my old 2-strokes will certainly dirty up a barrel with nasty crud.
Still, pretty crodgety of the old fellow! :)

I know what I would tell him! But it would not be allowed on this forum, and yes, I smoke, I drink and I run my two stroke Big Twin wide open when I get the chance!

Re: 2-stroke to 4-stroke converts

There should be a hint of blue smoke on initial start up, but almost nothing visable while running. Do you think it's smoking more than it should? Post a video. if there is a question, get with the mechanic to see if the oil injection pump is operating properly. After 12 years, it's possible that's it's about to give up. When they go, it's usually fast and you have nothing to show but a burnt engine. A lot of boaters, jet skiers, etc block off the injection pump and go with premix. It's a bit more of a hassle, but you know you're constantly getting the proper amount of lube in with the fuel. Not too much or too little.

BTW, I had a 1996 Merc 150 Saltwater Series which was 2-stroke/carb. Smoked like crazy until I replaced the oil injection pump. Slight burp at cold start and never a bit more the rest of the day. I also had a 2004 Johnson 150 2-stroke/carb which never smoked at all. I used to always wonder if the oil injector worked because it never smoked, but the oil level would decrease so I knew it was tuned properly.

Get your engine checked before blaming your neighbor for being an old codger. Or, he might have respiratory problems and he thinks you are trying to kill him!! :D

Re: 2-stroke to 4-stroke converts

I'd tell the guy that his old motor used to smoke worse than yours, and you never complained about that. and then idle there all day long just to p him off!! last i checked its a free country and i'm glad i have a boat and motor to go fishing with. some ppl have certain ways to make a point, he has the money for a four stroke so he is trying to "put you in your place" so to speak.

Maybe you should add that he has to dispose of his used 4stroke oil at some point. I hope he forgets to deal with all the added maintenance of a four stroke and runs that motor into the ground. then you can laugh at him while you are out fishing and he is screwed.

2-Stroke smoke is the sweetest smell in the world, be it on the water, on a frozen tundra, or on a sand dune...nothing matches the explosive power of the 2 stroke....too bad all the hippies are getting their way...:(

The main thing a few hippies accomplished is making dope readily available to children. They wouldn't have even noticed a little engine smoke, but I guess you knew that.
