ok...beginner here. I just bought an old motor (its not really a motor repair question) off Ebay for $100. Its 3 1/2 horsepower and its a Chrysler. Thats all I know about this motor or any other. I know I use a gas/oil mixture, anyone have an idea of the typical mix 16/1 or 20/1 or whatever? Also (now you'll know I'm a newbie) this thing has a pull-to-start contraption....with this thingy, do I need a battery? I had one for my old trolling motor...I just don't know if I still need this thing to help start it.
any help would be great
thanks!!!!!
(stop laughing at me :)

Re: 2 stupid questions

I can't see you and you can't see me so neither of us knows whether we are laughing at each other. Pull start engines don't need a battery to run. They have what's called a magneto ignition system. Without a model number and or serial number we can't tell you what year it is but it more than likely requires a 50:1 fuel/oil ratio which is one pint of TCW3 rated two-stroke oil to six gallons of fuel. Now six gallons will run this thing all summer so you might want to mix a smaller batch. Do not start it without having it in a barrel of water. It needs cooling water or it will overheat and fry. Running it dry will ruin the water pump impeller which probably should be replaced before you start it as its likely never been changed. change the lower unit oil (in the bulge by the prop). Give it fresh gas, a dash of SeaFoam (fuel treatment) and see if it'll run.

I am not laughing at you- in fact quite the opposite- I am quite proud of you. Usually, it seems that someone does not research anything- then they come here for help after wrecking their engine. Give yourself some credit. You are smartier than you think.

It excites me seeing new people getting into boating. You don't have to spend a ton of money to be able to participate. Don't hesitate to ask more questions, and let us know how you make out! :)

Please post model number and serial number if you can find it on the motor.

Re: 2 stupid questions

Try posting the model and serial number info on the Force/Chrysler board. Roscoe will be along to give you details.

Re: 2 stupid questions

FYI - you have a 1968 or 69 model year motor.
