Considering the extra weight of a 4 stroke, would a 15hp 2 stroke preform near a 25hp 4 stroke on a small, say, 14' aluminum boat?

Howdy.

No. Most of the 25hp 4 strokes weigh around 130lb and the 15lb 2 strokes around 80lb. That is only about 50lb difference.

Fifty pounds would not make a noticable difference in top speed of your tinny. Either engine should have no problem planing the boat, the 15 might have to work a bit to get up on the step.

Good luck. :)

Re: 2 vs 4 stroke

I have a 14 foot Aluminum with a 15 hp 2 stroke and it will plane with one 200 lb man and fishing gear. With a second 130 lb female it will plane add fishing gear and it might plane. With two guys and fishing gear will not plane. With three does not ever get close. My prop is 9 3/8D by 8 P by 3 blade stainless. Standard 9 1/2 D by 10 by 3 aluminum was even more of a dog.

If your 14 foot is rated for 25HP get the 25. The 4 stroke cost more today but gets much better fuel mileage is quieter does not smoke, better on the enviroment and legal on all waters.

I see no reason to ever buy another 2 stroke unless you have to carry it down the bank to put on the boat because there is no launch ramp.

Hello:
My dad has a 14ft DLX Lund with the floor, deep cycle battery, trolling motor and a 15hp Honda.
With 2 200lb+ people and gear in the boat it planes out with no problem and actually cruises at a very respectable pace. Any fourstroke in the 20hp range should be more than adequate for your boat.
