2-wire to 3-wire trim conversion

Hey all,

So I have another question regarding my motor swapout... my old motor (83'), had a "two-wire" trim tilt setup with the relays... my new motor is actually older, (78') and has a 3 wire lead for the trim motor...

The link above for the wiring diagrams, does not show the 3-wire system...

I know the older system uses a solenoid rather than relays, does anyone have information on how to get this setup? (right now am just jumping them across the battery, but thats neither safe nor reliable).

I did a search, and found some information on going the opposite way, but not what I am looking for.

A wiring diagram for the 3-wire trim system would be a big help!

Here's a wiring diagram:

The boat that I'm working on had everything stripped. There's a good chance that the motor will not stay on this boat, so temporarily I just used a $12 Ford starter solenoid, and a cheap terminal from Radio Shack. If I decide to keep the motor on this boat, I'll redo this.

Thanks so much, that will be a big help!

One more question, (don't want to start yet another thread), but how do I test the actual trim/tilt gauge? I assume it works on resistance just like a fuel sender, what is the range supposed to be? Thanks again!

I don't have a trim gauge on this boat, but the resistance on my sending unit goes from 42 ohms fully down, to about 1.5 fully up. If you loosen the screws on the sender, you can adjust it to your gauge.
