I was recently advised to use 105 weight oil for the lower unit to address leaking lower unit. This sounds questionable. Wouldn't it be better to reseal the gearbox & check the water pump (even though it seems to be pumping fine)?

Oil is cheap - gears cost big $. Have the lower unit pressure tested to find the leak and fix. When you are done use the oil recommended in your owners manual - it is formulated for that purpose.

And yes it is a good idea to rebuild the water pump while you are at it.

Oh - And - Welcome!

Hi Brogman,
Definitely go through the unit and reseal it. Doing a band-aid job will come back to bite you in the end. Check out your local library for a manual, get yourself a seal kit (around $20.00 at NAPA) andget back on the water!
- Scott
