I have recently purchased an older 20hp Evinrude (early 80's) but the ID Tag does not match the motor. It appears that the bracket with the tag had been changed for some reason. I require a seal kit for the lower end as I found a large amount of water when I went to drain the gear oil. I also require a water pump kit as a routine maintence thing.

The motor is light blue with a white hood. I have a picture if there is a way to post it. Could someone help me out on the Model number.

Hello newf1 and welcome aboard iboats!

Take a look on the engine block for a large core plug. The engine Serial number and model number will be on it. Post the model number or take it to your local John/Rude dealer, and we/dealer can tell you the year.

Have any other questions? Just post. :)

Thanks. I'll take a look tomorrow.

Can anyone tell me if replacing the seals for the lower unit is a big job, I'd rather tackle it myself if feasible along with the water pump kit.

After checking the engine block the only ID numbers found stamped on the core plug was C7141888. Is this the model number or part number?

This is an early 80's 20 HP evinrude. Blue with a white hood.

Changing the water pump is not a huge endeavor. Once you find the correct year of the engine make sure you buy a manual. It will help you with more than just the water pump. Once the year is established then you will get posts telling how to change it or just do a search on this site. I know it has been covered a lot. If there are any peculiarities about your particular engine then rodbolt, OBJ, or someone will let you know.

That is not the model number, but rather the serial number. Usually the welsh plug only has the serial number, but sometimes they have the model number on them too.
A search of this site shows that serial number C711nnnn was an '81 engine and C715nnnn was an '82 engine. So most likely yours is either an '81 or '82, and more likely the '82.

Hope this helps!

Re: 20 HP Evinrude ID

I ended up ordering an Water Pump Kit as well as a lower unit seal kit form Laings Outboards. I sent some pictures along with some info from the info provided on this forum. He figured he knew what parts I needed.

I do have a question in regard to 2 oil seals. How do I remove the main oil seal located just below the waterpump as well as the brass bushing and O-Ring for the shift rod?
