Have a 20HP Merc. After having rebuilt the bottom end I took it out for a spin and by GPS got a honest 19 mph with just me in the boat. With me and a fishing bud we got 15 MPH which isn't bad as we are no little guys (260 lbs each).

Problem occurred this weekend. We were cruising across the lake at WOT doing around 14 to 15 MPH when the motor just died out. Starts and idles fine but when you give it throttle to go it now justs dies. Starts right back up and will idle fine in gear but give it any throttle and it dies.

I guessed it was getting too much fuel and am suspicious of a stuck float by why would it just do it all of a sudden? In neutral engine will rev up no problem but put a load on it and boom no can rev.

Also checked compression, guage only reads 55 for top and 54 for bottom. I am not sure if the guage is accurate though. Add some 2 stroke oil to cylinders and readings go up 10 lbs each.

Carb had just been cleaned and timing done. Plugs look fine with only a bit of fouling present.

Any other thoughts?

not sure what your compression should be and your not sure if its accurate. but it does sound like a fuel issue. Father in laws little motor did the same thing when fuel pick up was plugged with crud from old bad gas. also sounds like tank might not be venting enough. hose an d primer bulb, as well as fuel pump could be issues. trying to pump primer bulb when it tries to die might narrow it down to fuel. if it would accelerate with little load on it and wont go with a full load, then it might be compression.
