20 hp with a crack in foot

Have had problem with the motor not going into gear as mentioned in previous post, and a friend suggested checking the lower unit oil. opened the drain and vent this evening and nothing came out. So attached the pump and filled and noticed a crack about two inches long just behind the water pick up. Question is can the foot be welded and still be used?

i had one welded and it worked ok....had to pull the parts outta the lower unit

Good now why can i not get the prop off is there a trick to it or what
