Installing a used crank in my 2001 200 EFI Merc. Crank looks good but the oil pump drive gear seems to be loose on the crank. The gear teeth look unhurt. Mercury shop manual says not to replace gear unless it displays excessive looseness. Can anyone define "excessive looseness" for me? I can't compare to the original crank since the original owner discarded it after teardown. On older engines (late '80s) I routinely removed the oil injection systems due to a lack of trust. I would like to run the oiler on this engine but the looseness of the gear has me spooked, any thoughts?

The 1998 was measured on all bearing surfaces and compared to the original 2001 piece and was identical except for the bad #1 rod journal on the 2001 crank. I have one other crank of unknown origin on the shelf. All 3 of these crankshafts have the plastic oil pump drive gear on them and the all have some degree of looseness. Is this normal? Is there a measurement to determine acceptability for use?

The differences are the crank mains and then oil drive gear does have some loosness on the drive peg side to side but should not have any up or down...
