My 200 HPDI engine mounted oil tank level dropps when the engine is off. It will normally be at the upper level when I turn the engine off. By the following weekend it will drop to midway between the upper & lower level marks. It smokes heavily at the first start of the weekend. I seem to remeber reading something once that the oil pump will run with the motor off if there is low voltage or something. Any ideas? Thanks, Bert

How long have you had this motor? And if you've had it awhile, did this just start happening?

either one of the inline oil pump check valves has failed or the engine pump shaft seals have failed.
has nothing to do with the electric transfer pump.

Re: 200 HPDI Engine Oil Tank Level Drops When Off

I have owned this engine since new in 2002. I have had a few issues related to the oil system.

My first problem was within the first 10 hours on the engine. The low oil alarm went off because the engine oil tank was low. I used the switch on the engine to pump oil into the tank & all seemed well for a while. Then the engine started to smoke extremely bad at start up & was fouling plugs. The engine oil tank was over filling. I took it to the shop & they said the problem was that the oil tank cap was on improperly & that the float was sticking in the tank neck.

The next problem was discovered when the oil alarm went off again. I replaced the filter in the engine oil tank and all was fine.

The engine has always smoked at initial start up more than I thought it should. Recently is the first time I removed the engine cover before starting it it for a week to see where the oil level was. The engine does not smoke except at starting after not running for a while. This is a Model# Z200TXRA.
Thanks, Bert

first problem was lack of operator attention, what we call a loose nut behind the helm. thats what the oil tank visual indicate is for, it illuminates when the remote goes low and automatic transfer is inhibited and enough oil is left for two manul transfers.
this problem can be eliminated by simply observing/topping off the remote tank at each tank fill up.
filter clogging at the remote tank is always a maint/operator issue.
you would not beleive the nasty sand filled funnels I see under the deck used to fill the tank.
an improperly installed float switch is usually cause someone without the tech manual was playing with it.
none of the above can be considered a Yamaha problem.
however now your describing an actual problem.
if the engine tank is actually draining while sitting you either have debris in a check valve between the engine oil pump and the intake manifold or the pump shaft seals are leaking.
debris is normally introduced into the pump when someone removes the engine tank float switch assy without draining the oil tank first.

Re: 200 HPDI Engine Oil Tank Level Drops When Off

You offer some good advice and take some liberties and are totally wrong. I won't say what we call this. My boat, 2002 Hurricane Sundeck, does not have the illuminating lights you say I did not pay attention to. I only have red lights that come on with the audible alarm. I guess that you are talking about the series of lights that my owners manual shows that I do not have. Also, the remote tank was full. In fact, this happened the first time I had the boat out after the initial test drive after it was delivered. Someone, not me, did not install the cap or float switch properly. The boat/engine was brand new and I had never removed the engine cover until the alarm went of in the middle of our lake.

The oil tank filter is something I could have prevented. But, my Yamaha owners manual does not say anything about maintenance on this item. It only mentions the water separator on the oil tank. The filter that I replaced looked totally clean. But, after changing it the problem went away. I take a lot of care to keep my oil fill device clean. I have a spout that screws onto the containers of Yamalube that I keep sealed on both ends in my garage.

Is the check valve something I can remove and test or should I simply replace it? Thanks, Bert
