I've been fighting a battery non-charging issue for a couple weeks. It's warm enough for me to try and fix. I replaced all the connections at the battery terminals hoping that was the problem. With the key off and nothing else connected, I would get a spark to the battery terminal when I tried to hook up the negative lead (meaning drawing instant current). I opened the circuit and measured the current between the negative terminal and the negative lead and got next to nothing. I rotated the flywheel an inch or so and then tried hooking up the battery again...no spark and no drop on the battery voltage. From my limited intuition, I'd say there was a bad winding in the stator. Would any of you agree or disagree?

UPDATE...see below:confused:

Yep...I charged it to 12.93VDC and hooked up the main leads from the engine. I opened the Ignitor circuit (G-G-G) wires from the Stator Assy and kept the charging circuits (low/high...B/R, Bl, Br, R) and didn't have any voltage drop. I then connected the Ignitor circuits and the voltage instantly went down to 12.19VDC. It seemed stabilized for a minute or two and I could hear some noise coming from the Stator Assy (kind of like the wires were warming up...a faint crackling noise). Didn't know if they had inductor or capacitors that remained charged while not running or whatever. I left for a few hours and came back and the battery had 235mV. Regular battery charger shut down after trying to supply too much current. I guess it could also be something in the Voltage Regulator but the sound from the Ignitor makes me think it's there. Any thoughts guys? This one has got me a bit pissed and a new stator assy is about $500...so like Rodbolt says, I'll want to ensure it is indeed bad before I spend the cash on a new one.

OK...update. I pulled the VRR thinking that if the diode went bad, it would allow battery voltage back up to the Ignitor circuits. I connected battery voltage to the red/white wires going into the VRR (as it would be when installed), I was able to get battery voltage on 2 of the 3 wires going to the Ignitor. If there is really a diode in the VRR would it not act to block battery voltage from going into the Stator assy (in this case the Ignitor circuits)? If the diode has failed it could act as a short and allow voltage to those circuits and cause a drain on the battery...I think. Anyone know enough about these things...Rodbolt or any of the other Yammie techs?

the best way to test a rect/reg is EZ
get a hand held meter
turn it to a/c volts
put the leads on the battery
start the motor
rev it up a little
if you see more that .8 a/c volts bad ret/reg

other that that u can check diodes with a diode meter

Re: 200 ox66...stator (or VRR) help please (vx200tlrb)

Thanks JUSTINTIME...the only reason I'm hesitant to run the motor with it on is that it discharges the battery in quick fashion if I've got the ignitor circuits connected and I'm not comfortable applying DC to them when they're not designed for it (don't want to ruin a $500 part when trying to troubleshoot a $125 part). I will use the diode checker now. *elapse 5 minutes* I've got 2 circuits coming out of the VRR (2 solid red wires and 2 red/white wires), the one that was connected (red/white) showed a shorted diode on one of the 3 green wires to the Ignitor and one forward voltage was low off of the other wires (.2V), the third was alright .7V. However, when checking the other output (solid red) I had good forward voltage on all and no backward voltage. I think I can rewire to use the good charging circuit and be done with it. Is this correct? Thanks for the revelation of using the diode checker...I feel like an idiot for not thinking of it before. My only other concern is that the lines coming from the ignitor circuits have paths to ground...at least one is a dead short, the other two have a couple hundred ohms (without knowing the exact schematic of the VRR I can't know if this is alright). I think I'll just bite the bullet and install a new VRR rather than try and use one bank hoping the circuitry as a whole on that side remained intact.

Finally got the new VRR in. All of the green (ignitor circuits) wires have 5.6 megaohms resistance to ground. All the diodes test at .46VDC forward and 0 backward. So, it appears the VRR was the cause. I'll install tomorrow and take her out for a run. Thanks for the interest and recommendations JUSTINTIME.
