200 Trim and Titl strange operation

1990 200 Black Max-I've owned it since 1990.
Trim and tilt unit replaced about 15 years ago with completely new unit, minimal use since then. At end of last year tilt ram had developed slight leak (engine would leak down over a few days) around wiper ring and/or seal.

Last week pulled motor from boat, removed trim/tilt unit from motor. I had an extra tilt cylinder so I removed the lower pivot pin (don't know the technical name) holding the tilt cylinder and replaced leaking cylinder/ran and replaced pivot pin.

After reassembly of motor (and unfortunately reinstallation of motor to boat) I have a very unusual problem

Motor will "tilt" up and down without problems. Motor will not "trim" down. More baffling- after I relieve pressure valve and motor bottoms out trim rams- I push the "down" button and the motor trims UP.- push the up button and it still goes up.
With motor slightly trimmed up so I can witness the trim pistons moving- once the button is pushed "down" the pistons very slightly retract about n 1/8" then start extending upward.

I've never removed and replaced the lower pivot pin before. I noticed mine has two small set screw in the end. Are these for bleeding or alignment purposes? Or should I be checking for some type of stuck check valve within the hydraulic system?

Any advice is greatly appreciated

That lower pivot pin has oil passages to the tilt cylinder. Those plugs seal the end of those oil passages. The unit is self bleeding. As long as it doesn't leak from the pivot pin, I would look elsewhere for the problem. You did get the pivot pin all the way in, and installed the keeper?

Have you tried reinstalling the PTT unit on the motor and then testing the Trim ram operation? On my Johnson outboard (similar PTT), the tilt cylinder pulls the motor down, forcing the trim rams to retract. Therefore, the unit has to be installed on the motor to work properly. Just a guess.

I believe the pin is seated (keeper is in place).
My casual observation of the pin looked like there wasn't any alignment needed.

PTT is on motor- motor is back on boat.

Cycled (and attempted to add fluid) at least twenty-five time now with same results.

Are the trim and tilt independent systems? The tilt portion works correctly

Sounds like you rolled the center o-ring or its missing in tilt ram.

If center o-ring is rolled (which I could completely see happening)- do I need to remove trim system again or "could" I get lucky and punch the pin out slightly then back into place and maybe re-seat o-ring- without removing motor/trim from boat?

Unfortunately I think I know that answer. If (when) I remove the trim unit and pin, will I need new O-rings? Also on reinsertion of pin, is there any type of alignment mark/indicators or is this a non-issue.

Thanks

Just pull the side bracket but make sure motor is supported. Pull pin and inspect/replace
