Hi,

I think one 200 hp or 225 hp outboard on a 33 ft boat is not enough hp.
Do You mean a twin outboard installation?

Tell us more about the boat specification.

I'm with Bo - - a single V6 won't cut it. I doubt that it would get any decent 33'er on plane.

i think both engines are proven. depends what you want- with the twin optimax, you have 50 more ponies with the traditional 2-stroke acceleration and top end. a little more performance. but you'll be louder (opti's have a distinct sound, but not too loud), and smoke a little. the yamaha will produce zero smoke, be very quiet, and save you a little in fuel. i love my yamaha, but i also don't care if i can get on plane 2 seconds faster than the guy next to me.

Hi,
Perhaps the initial price for the two outboards is not super important? What is important, to keep the cost down in the long run and You also be happy with the two outboards you select, is that You have a dealer/mechanic You know will service the outboards correctly and give you good advice how you should take best care of the outboards. Todays outboards can be rather complicated things. If the dealer/marine mechanic has not the proper tools and diagnostic software for your outboard you could be paying for bad maintenance and poor troubleshooting later.
What I'm saying is that if you have a very good Yamaha dealer where You live that will take care of your outboard I would select that (even if you get only 200x2 hp with Yamaha F200). Same thing with Mercury 225 Optimax.

The Yamaha reputation is rather good as such so You probably will be satisfied with twin F200.
Yamaha has highest ranks in J.D. Power and Associates customer satisfaction for 4-strokes in both 2003 and 2004 (2005 for 2-strokes).

On the other hand You probably want as much power as possible on a 33 ft boat so twin 225 or 250 hp is probably better performance wise.
Twin Yamaha F250 would probably be the best but also rather costly.

I use Yamaha myself but only a F115 4-stroke.
Works very good. It is a 2003 so I have used it
3 seasons now (in freshwater only).

Good luck.

The 225 Yamaha 4 stroke is almost 90 lbs heavier than the Optimax.
If it was me I would buy a saltwater series E-Tec.
