Found a replacement gearcase assy from sei and it does not come with a vertical driveshaft or a shift shaft. How is this a gearcase assy? I guess 795.00 was too good to be true. What does it take to pull these parts from my exsisting gearcase? Thanks

SEI's website is very clear on the driveshaft deal.

Look at the parts list on BRP Evinrude website and you will see the driveshaft is retained by a hex nut on the lower end inside the gearcase.

I would recommend an OEM shop manual and you'll need a way of retaining the driveshaft to torque the nut during re-assembly. BRP has a special tool for use with a breaker bar for holding the splined end. I have made a similar tool from a junk crank by cutting off the bottom end and welding a 1/2" drive socket to it.

I believe SEI supplies all LU's with a lower driveshaft installed. You just need to buy the correct upper, if I read their data correctly. Their prices are still way less than BRP's, even if you need the upper driveshaft.

I have not looked for details on their website but what do you have to take apart to get to the retaining nut for the driveshaft. Does the hole gearcase have to come apart for this or am I crazy. Thanks for your help

If $150 includes them attaching the upper part of the shaft, then it's a great deal. All you have left is screwing in your old shift shaft.

If I understand correctly, in order to connect the upper to the lower, you still have to take out the lower portion because you can't get the pin in it. This requires removing the pinion nut/gear and pulling the shaft out. Is this correct? If so, you'd be better off using your existing shaft. You have to take apart the old one to get the shaft out, and take apart the SEI unit to attach the upper portion.

Ignore what I said above until someone verifies it. I would just call SEI and ask them what it will take and if they will install the shaft for you.

Good luck...I took a chance on a used lower and so far so good. But you can't beat SEI's warranty and price.

If they used the newer 2 piece shaft all you need is the upper shaft. It pops into the lower, then the pump goes on, screw in your shift shaft, adjust the shift shaft height and you're good to go. You do not have to disassemble the case to install or remove the upper drive shaft.
