I have a 2000 130hp johny that runs great but has slight side to side play in the flywheel, not a lot maybe .003 at most,is this an indication of the upper bearing assembly wearing out or another underlying problem?.Is it possible to remove the upper head assembly without splitting the case on this 90 degree looper?,Any help appreciated, thanks

when you say side to side do you mean the you can push the fly wheel left and right or while you are spinning it you get slack back and forth. I think on that model you can pull the bearing without spliting the crank case but you should be able to tell by looking at it. If I am thinking of the right motor It should have two screws on the top side of the bearing housing followed by two orings then the top of the crank case. If it is slack while you are spinning it pull the plugs and listen in the cylinders for the slack which will indicate a bad rod bearing. If you pull the crank case in half make sure the crankshaft bearing are all lined up with the notches in the crank case or when you put it back togeather you will have more problems. The bottom bearing will also comeout without spliting the cranks case but you have to pull the powerhead.

Dsinger,The flywheel has slight play side to side (left to right)without spinning it.This model has eight bolts that hold down the bearing assembly followed by two orings under it.Ive rebuilt this style of powerhead before so i know all about the notches on the center bearing.Im just wondering if i can pry the head up after removing the bolts and if I can get it back on with new orings without damage to them. Thanks alot for the reply.

Yes it can be done, with moderate difficulty. Lube the orings up good before trying to put the cap back in. I like to use ATF
