I have a 2000 150hp on a 19 foot boat that I have just bought. Cleaned the tank, new fuel lines, new filter (not origanil Mercury) and fitted a fuel/water seperator. Motor has been sitting around I would say. Took it out, started slowly, but when warm starting no problem, idle slowly comes down until engine stops. Motor will not rev past 2000 rpm, boggs down, missing sometimes a knocking noise like pre detenation??? When you place the motor in reverse though the motor revs out and seems to go great. Any ideas of the problem???

Have also a tilt problem, only works when it wants to, any ideas here...

Could be old gummed up fuel in the carbs if it was sitting a long time. May be time for a rebuild and clean them out.
Since the motor is new to you, it wouldn't hurt to do a compression test, check the fire on all coils, new spark plugs, a cleaning with Mercs Power Tuner, and a complete sync and link (after the carbs are looked at). Then you will know that all is ok.

While doing all that, it wouldn't hurt to change the gear lube, and probably the raw water pump impeller.

Both directions???? Start by checking all the connections from the motor to the helm.

The tilt has problems both ways. If you tap the transom mount it will work. But getting harder to get to work by this method.
