I just bought a J14 with a 2000 25hp Tohatsu 2-stroke. Before I bought it, we cranked it with the muffs and it started like a charm. Of course, after I bought it, I took it to the landing and now it won't start. The plugs and everything look fine, but I have limited knowledge about outboards. The prime bulb gets hard, but after pulling the motor several times I notice it is only half-hard. Also, it appears the fuel and oil is leaking out the bottom of the motor. I don't know much, but something tells me this is not good. Can anyone help me identify and fix the problem? Thanks in advance for the help.

Re: 2000 25hp Tohatsu

Start from the beginning and read through the owners manual. It's usually something simple that people overlook. If you didn't get a owners manual you can download a free one here:

http://www.internetoutboards.com/tech_faqs.asp

If you still have a problem:

1st, check for spark.
2nd, check compression
3rd, check gear oil
4th, check with your local dealer about how long it will take before they can look at it :)

I would make real sure the kill switch hasn't vibrated loose. Yeah, been there, done that, hehehehe!
