So....the insurance news is in and I'm approved for a long block. Question is, should I go with that or pay the difference for a bobtail. Where I live, the estimates are 10 K for the long block and about double for the new engine.

$20k into a 15 year old boat seems like a strange financial decision. $10k for a long block seems about $5k too high unless it includes the labor to install it. Personally I like to turn wrenches and so you should take my advice with that in mind.

how far from civilization do you live with a long block quote of $10k?

A new long block is less than $3K... Add 2 days labour to dress and install (and I think I'm being generous), that's 16 hours at $100/hr, and the total is still less than $5K.... Me thinks those numbers (you're been quoted) are off somewhere.

Well, that's certainly cheaper than the block I've been quoted. I'm wondering if the difference could be that my quote is for a Volvo Gxi 5.7. I realize it's a GM product, but does Volvo actually turn them out as well? Because it's an insurance claim, I'm not paying the cost of the longblock or the labour to put it in, just my deductible. Also, the shipping cost to get it to the West Coast of BC must be up there (and would include border duties). My actual quote was $7300 for the longblock and $2500 for labour, test running and sea trial (plus tax).

Nope, Volvo only make some of the add-ons (mainly exhaust manifolds and flywheel housings), not the longblock, and most of the electrical and fuel system is also 'bought in'...... $7,300 for the longblock seems a little steep. I have a complete engine shipped into Australia, and it was $8K landed, including insurance, freight, and our outrageous taxes. But, if insurance is paying.... The only thing that worries me is that if all these companies continue to up the ante when insurance is involved, we all end up paying extra for the premiums....
