Bought a pontoon that had been sitting for a couple of years. I was trying to run the engine in the yard after cleaning the carbs with the water muff. I think i had had a fuel hose crimped after reinstalling carbs and airbox. I was having issues keeping it running when i started it and it fired and engine went to high rev's and wouldn't shut off. I turned key off pulled safety stop lanyard and it still kept running....in my panic i hit gearshift cause i thought linkage may have been hung.

In doing this i believe it got shifted in forward and reverse and screwed up the lower unit gears. I took the lower unit off and proceeded to dismantle it to try and see how much damage was done. Pulled the lowest screw out and i found a lot of metal shavings in the grease. I hear a lot of metal grinding and clanging when shaking the lower unit.

I have removed the shift cover, shift rod, gear shaft bearing housing cover and 2 other screws. My problem is i think i have pulled off all the screws and bolts but don't know how to get the gears and drive haft out. Is there a special tool that removes the prop shaft housing and the drive shaft? or do they pry out?

J50PLSOC model

I have pretty much figured it's gonna cost a arm and leg to fix.

If it ever runs away on you again, stuff some rags in the air intakes for the carbs.

Yeah I know but I didn't have time. Was in pontoon and no rags avaliable.......oops i mistyped the heading....should have said 2005 instead of 2000......

So #24 should come out with the right type bearing puller??? And after that the gears and everything else should come out? After studying the pic again the driveshaft #30 will come out after taking the Pinion nut#29 off. and ya cant get to that till everything else comes out 1st?

Correct, when you get the bearing housing out, the rear gear will come out and then you have to remove the nut on the bottom of the driveshaft. Then you can pull the drive shaft.
Do you have a factory manual, would be a good investment as you will need the specs when you go back togeather.

Finally got it apart. Looks like all the gears are chewed up. I think it was the forward gear that was in numerous peices. The nut that's is on the driveshaft is in chewed up where a wrench slips off and won't get a hold. Even the prop shaft has damage to the splines. Looks to cost lots of $$$ .$2500 to 3000 for new lower unit. Gonna call around next week to local dealer's to check rebuild prices. Or may just cut my losses if I have to pay that much and put that money on a newer engine.
