Re: 2000 50hp johnson water problem

Did the motor over heat? The motor is affected by back pressure while in the water. Hence runs in driveway not in the water. See if you can run it with it only slightly submerged. but enought to get water to the pump after starting lower the motor. Also check that the timming arm can move freely. Some times they get caught up in the wires or if it got hot the plastic/nylon piece under it could have melted. It could even just be gummed up.

You need to do some troubleshooting.

Pull the plugs - tell us what they are + gap & appearance.

Do compression check & post the results here.

Check for spark with a spark tester. Spark should be a bright blue snap & jump at least a 1/4" gap.

Put some pre mix in a spray bottle & spray directly into the carb when attempting to start. Does it fire?

The above should give you an indication of whether the problem is fuel or electrical.

Often problems like yours are due to crud in the carb which needs a thorough cleaning & rebuild but do the troubleshooting first & post the results back here & someone will jump in.

Check the pulse hose to the Fuel/oil pump. The starter rubs a hole in the hose.

Re: 2000 50hp johnson water problem

Today we sprayed carb cleaner in the carbs and it started and ran for awhile, then shut off.We are getting fuel from the tank, through the inline filter and then it doesnt seem to be getting in the carbs.Someone said there might be to much water in the tank and its not firing.I will try the things you sugested and see what happens. Thanks
