Unless you want something as a hobby or a learning project, its best to pass on the motor. It may run great and be fine, but being already 11 years old and parts getting expensive and harder to find, it has no resale value at all.

Man, that was just not a good year for Evinrudes. OMC went bankrupt at the end of 2000. That particular motor may be OK, but it will be pretty expensive to fix if it's not OK. By the time the 2000 models came out, most of the bugs seemed to have been worked out on them, but I would still rather get an older carb'ed motor than a newer FICHT. Parts are already getting limited and expensive for the FICHTs, like the vapor separator/fuel pump (limited availability, $675) and fuel injector ($555). Finding someone qualified to work on them could also be an issue depending on your area.

I would think a slightly older carbed motor would definitely be the better way to go if you're on a budget. As said, if the FICHT screws up, it will cost the heck out of you to get someone to work on it. Very few used motors that are for sale, don't need at least a little work. The carbed 70hp triples by johnson/evinrude are spoken highly of reliability-wise ----I've never owned one. I also hear they're good on fuel.
I'd pass on the ficht 75.

Concure, an older carbed model would do you much better, they are super reliable and simple as a stone to work on.

The problem with the Ficht engine is they only made them for a few years right before they went belly up and it is a very complicated fuel injection system that operates at a really high pressure i.e lots to go wrong and few parts available to repair it.

I was working for OMC when they bought that system from some company in Germany, they morgaged the company to get it thinking it would change the world and it flopped really hard, they just aren't good engines.

If I were looking for a "new" one I would go late 80s, as I said they are bullit proof and simple a a stone to work on and parts are everywhere still.
