Just bought a used toon with the above motor with 15 hrs. on it. Put it in lake this w/e and no oil light came on within 5 minutes. Pumped the oil bulb and took off again and came on in a couple minutes. I then premixed the fuel and continued pumping bulb (light would go out for about a minute and come on again)..thinking air in line, but never fixed problem.

Just wondering if the VRO could go bad with so few hrs. Any suggestions. The motor is out of warranty. This is my first outboard.. Any idea on cost of new VRO.

Thanks

Hi -welcome to this board joybuz !

Has the motor been of the boat, or tank just disconnected. Try to premix 1:50 for the next 3 tanks ( the manual says so ! ). Fill the oiltank with 1 gallon of oil, prime it and mark the level on tank with speedmarker or tape. ( I know you will be using double oil )

In this way you can control oil consumption and compare to gas usage. You wil get an idea of the function.

Definately continue to run pre-mix until you get this issue sorted out! Anything IS possible, but look real closely at the oil hose running from the reservoir to the engine. Make sure its not kinked anywhere.

If its out of warranty, contact DFI Technologies www.dfitechnologies.com for a replacement pump. They can sell you a calibrated replacement unit with a warranty. They will want the original one as a core.

-John

Thanks for the info guys and I'm really glad I found this board. What a resource.

I ordered another VRO and will definately keep my eye on the resevoir. At the first sign of trouble, I'll go to pre-mixing, but would really rather not if I don't have to.

Just a thought but why wait for trouble? Premix that baby and never have to worry about that VRO pump again. I know I will when I rebuild my 'rude. A broken oil line melted one of my pistons last fall.
