Hey everyone,

So, I got a 2000 javelin with a 2000 johnson 90hp. Well, the compression checks out good. The problem is at idling and low rpms it will stall and die. I figure its the carbs...I read almost every thread in iboats on idling/low rpm and many say its the VRO and many say it's the carbs. I am lost...This is my second johnson 90hp, first one was a 1985. The same problems persist, just different years. Well, if I juice the throttle up to WOT, it runs fine. ( I know this may hurt my motor) I just tried it a few times on the lake to troubleshoot. My question is should I adjust the strator switch on the carbs(red switch that can turn left to right)? Will it make a difference? Or should I just pay someone to rebuild my carbs for so how many dollars?

Oh yeah, the prop looks a little banged up. Will that cause the issue?

Replies are very appreciated,
Chang

that is the primer, replaced the choke, do not turn it. handle should be turned back over the solenoid. i would check spark on all cylinders. also what are your idle rpms?

The entire reason for the existence of the outboard motor is to turn the propeller, without which the result is the same as driving a car without wheels.

Besides being similar to driving a car with flat tires, a damaged propeller can wear the entire power train unnecessarily.

BTW, Don't talk about propellers too much in this forum or your thread will be banished to the wastelands.

I had that same problem. All the tec said "thats jest the way the run". So I rebuilt the carbs, replaced that wires and put new plugs... Making sure the gap is right do not jest put then in. Now its jest like new. I can even troll and not load up at all! :D

Thanks everyone for replying.

The Rpm at idle is about 600rpm. Sorry for mentioning propellers in this section. (Won't happen again) I won't get the chance to check the sparks because I decided to bring the boat to a local certified evinrude/johnson shop. They said they'll look over it and clean the carbs. And service the lower unit and change the water prop. They also will change the VRO pump (at my request) to a standard fuel pump so I can mix the fuel-oil myself. The shop said if they find another problem they'll let me know. Thanks again everyone, I'll keep yall posted on this problem and let yall know what the culprit of this problem was so others will pick up any tips from this. (its gonna be 2 weeks from now to find out)

Sincerely,
Chang

Did they give a price quote, might be a bit of a shock otherwise.

2000 has an OMS pump not a VRO2 pump.

Hey everyone,

Ezeke, I would have to talk to the technician about the vro/oms pump and see what they'll do first.(theyre closed until tuesday). But, I'll let you know.

JonesG, The rough estimates are:

1) $200 for 2 carbs. ($100 each)
2) $75 for the oms pump switch
3) $150 for lower unit oil change and water pump change
4) $75 for installation of a fish finder( I havent got a clue how to intall one)
=$500 total
Does this estimate sound about right?

Thanks for the oms info, Tasasdaddy.

Sincerely,
Chang

Thats a pretty decent price but if you swap the OMS oil pump it might double the bill. Thats why so many people eliminate the OMS system and mix the oil and fuel in the tank themselves. I think the OMS system is better than premixing but its a question of dollars.

The prices quoted are for crossflow parts and installing a standard "old style" fuel pump.. Are you sure of year as 98 was last year for crossflow 90 if I remember correctly, the 2000 should be a looper. If it is a 60 degree looper ...find another shop.

Re: 2000 90hp idling problems...got carbs?

Wassup Iboat forum,

Well, I did a little bit of research on the oms system. It supposedly is a good oil system with 3 sensors that will send a signal to the consule dash light if the motor is not recieving enough oil. I guess the reason why the original vro system got such a bad rap is because it did not have a warning system until it was reintroduce post-1985, where it was called a vro-2 system and it came with a warning horn system. With that info, I was thinking about telling the shop not to remove my oms system but as a precautionary, just in case the sensors fails, I will still mix oil and fuel together but at a 100:1 ratio. What do you guys think, will this be okay for my motor?

Thanks in advance for any info,
chang
