Hell All,

I am looking at purchasing a very clean and nice 285 Bayliner. It has only 1 engine a 310 mercruiser w/ a Bravo III for its length of 28.5 feet. I have been told that this boat is under powered. Is this true? also what would the top cruising speed be wide open and what would be the safe cruising speed , as to not burn up the motor? Any other pointers know about this boat would be welcomed.

I appreciate your time and response

Thanks

Re: 2000 Bayliner 285 Cierra

The biggest concern with single screw, small blocks in Cruisers is just getting her to plane. The Bravo 3 solves that. If you would be satisfied with Bubba's speed estimates, then this could be a very nice package. I will guess 35 MPH, and although I agree about 3000 RPM cruise for boats that can do it, my guess is she will be squatting pretty bad at that RPM . . . ;) I would even consider a 4000 RPM cruise as acceptable with these newer, higher RPM rated engines. My '02.

BTW, there are a lot of 310s out there, but they are 454s, That rating is uaully called a 7.4L . . .

Correction:

350 MAG MPI MerCruiser? Bravo? III (300 HP)

Thanks

This would not be my first choice of an engine for that 28' cruiser.
But my dad had a 27' Chaparral cruiser that had a 350MAG MPI with a Bravo 3 and it did a fine job. It did need full trim tabs to help it plane faster. Top speed was about 40mph, and it needed about 3500-3800 rpm to cruise effectively. It was not uncommon to run that motor at 4000rpm. (WOT RPM for that engine should be 4400-4800) I would expect a 28' Bayliner to weigh about as much as that 27' Chaparral.

But by all means, sea trial it, with the number of people and the typical load you will be carrying, and see how it does.

My guess is that she has Bennett's or similar already installed. You're right . . . 330s. I think the 310s were carbed. Now I'm gonna look it up . . . imagine that

Re: 2000 Bayliner 285 Cierra

From 1998 - 2001 the 7.4L MPI was 310 . . . In 1997 there was a 7.4LX MPI at 330 and a 7.4LX EFI (TBI) at 300. In 1996 there was both a Carbed and TBI version at 300. In 1995 the only MPI was the 385, but there was a carbed 454MAG at 350 and a Carbed 7.4L at 300 . . . All Merc model years, I didn't go back any further. From 2002 on the 454 and 7.4L were gone.
