I have a 2000 EFI 2 stroke and I was 7 miles out and on the way home around 34/ full throttle and 5 minutes into the ride my engine just shuts down. I didn't' see anything wrong so just started back up went another 5 min. and it shut down again. The fuel fiter look like it could need changeing which I did but did not get a chance to run it again. Has this happen to anyone before, any idea's? I call my machanic and he said it could be water in the fuel. I will check that next. 02 sensor & draw tube was cleaned the begining of the summer. Thanks for any help

most likly a fuel restricton or a VST filter if the engine shuts off, if its just going into speed reduction and your getting any alarms it could be the remote oil tank filter. when EFI runs out of fuel the symtoms may not resemble lack of fuel and can mimick loss of ign.

Its just like loss of ignition. No reduction of speed, no alarms. VST filter how do you change or clean that or is that something that I should have a machnic take care of? Thanks Rodbolt

Do a quick search here for VST. Everyone here has been a great help! It is no more than a 30 minute fix to clean the filter. You will however need a new $25 gasket.

Good luck.

When all else fails take a close look at the system relay ,when it opens up it's just like someone turning the key off.you can find its location in the wiring diagrams. If you have to buy one make sure the package has not been opened or at least tell the counterman about it.

I changed the waterfuel/ separator to see if that helped. It didnt' help. I also noticed that the speedometer is not working. Does anyone know what makes that run and could this be part of the problem?

Be sure to check your low pressure fuel pumps as well. If you have a blown diaphram your will do this as well. I have experienced this as well

Can water or dirt get trapped in the vst tank? My machanic won't be able to get to it until next week maybe and I am wondering if it will it help to drain the vst tank in case there is water or dirt in there? I am going to have him look at it anyway but I am wondering if this might fix it.

you need to keep an eye on these motors to keep them running right. if you do they'll treat you right. get a factory manual and stick to the schedule. few quirks (o2 sensor test, search this site for right way to test). not sure whats been done to your engines but low pressure pumps, o2 sensor, vst filter, and fuel filters (remote and engine mounted), are critical to keep on top of. also new fuel has created some issues. i use only yamaha 10 micron filters and treat new fuel with stabilizer, ring free and only yamaha oil.

I cleaned the o2 sensor in the begining of the season. The fuel filter & water separator I just changed. I don't know what you mean about a remote filter? I just called my mechanic and he won't be able to look at it so I am going to attempt to clean the vst filter my self. Also I am going to change the three low pressure pump while I am there. What is a 10 micron filter? I bought the filters from yamaha and I always run yamaha ring free & oil. Thanks for your help.

Re: 2000 EFI SHUTS DOWN @ 3800 RPM

the remote would be the fuel filter/water seperator mounted inside the boat between the primer bulb and the fuel tank. there is also a filter on the port side of the engine ahead of the vst. the 10 micron is the screw on filter and means the filter will catch anything 10 microns and up in size. yamaha offers a 10 micron filter. the new fuel is causing problems too so don't overlook that. tends to gel if mixed with older and no longer available fuel with mtbe. loosens up debris in fuel tanks that will clog filters and more.

Cleaning an O2 sensor is very tricky, one fingerprint and it's no good...how did you clean it? Did you use a torch? Did you dunk it in solvent?

On the 10 micron filter that is something I have to ask for its not just the regular fuel filter? In maine they outlawed mtbe gas so it hasn't seen mtbe in a while. On the O2 sensor I let the tip sit in carb cleaner then cleaned it with a brush also more important is the draw tube I let that soak overnight then cleaned it with pipe cleaners. Thanks for the help.

i think it's a standard now for yamaha. the filter i'm talking about is long and clearly marked 10 micron. also blue canister color

Re: 2000 EFI SHUTS DOWN @ 3800 RPM

Well I changed the two low presure fuel pumps and I cleaned the vst filter with carb cleaner but it is still doing the same thing. It just shuts down after running 3500rpms and up. Bernieb wrote (take a close look at the system relay) which I will do but is there anything else I should try. One thing i noticed is my speedometer is note working right. I dont know if this is part of the problem? Another thing, is the primer buld supposed to get hard when pumping? When I primed it after replacing the pumps it didn't get hard. Thanks

I cleaned the vst filter with carb cleaner, is that the correct way to clean it. I am just wondering if it still might be dirty?

Re: 2000 EFI SHUTS DOWN @ 3800 RPM

"Conclusion" Just got my boat back from the dealer. He said the problem was a piece of shop cloth in the gas tank clogging the pick-up screen inside the gas tank also he changed the fuel line to the primer bulb. He said it wasn't a paper towel but it looked like something a shop would use to clean an oil spill, don't know when or how it got there. Your replys were correct in thinking it was a fuel problem and probably saved me some money by changing the vacum fuel pumps, filters, cleaning the VST filter, primer bulb my self, things that he would have done anyway. I have not ran the boat yet so I hope its fixed but I just wanted to tell you just incase someone else gos through this. Thanks for your help.
