I just changed the water pump on my Johnson 115. I got the lower unit back on, but I'm having trouble getting the shift rod linkage re-engaged. I think the rod has rotated to where the hole no longer lines up.

Is there a trick to this? Should I pull the lower unit back off and start over?

The shift rod height has to be set before the unit goes back on. There is a very specific height in your manual. The offset faces forward. If the rod turns when you install the unit you must line it back up. The shift rod will not be screwed all the way into the case.

Thanks for the reply. I confirmed the measurement before I put the gearcase back on.

Long story short -- I finally got the rod turned back with the offset facing forward. Then after considerable effort and a fair amount of cussin' I finally got the darn thing to go back together.

It shouldnt be hard to do at all. Did you pop the starboard pan off?
