I have a 2000 Johnson 150 ocean pro J150VXSSS. It has factory oil injection on it.
The 2000 commercial grade Johnson150hp J150WPLSSC comes from factory with the non-oiling version of the VRO. Why?
What are some of the other part differences on this motor, vs the recreational model?

Commercial motors really are not much different than recreational motors.---A few less features and some added hype from the sales department.

A lot of the commercial guys run more Spartan boats, some without steering wheels and electronics. For that reason you will see high HP tiller models and motors w/o fancy electrics being sold to them.

Its not just sales hype, The commercial motors, like OMC engines, use lower compression heads for lower octane/poor quality fuels, The gearcases are usually geared to a lower ratio to swing larger pitch propellers for heavier loads too.

These engine lines started life for use in overseas countries like the pacific basin and third world areas where people like fishermen and water taxis were their livelihood.

My Father replaced his seized up 115 Evinrude (ran over a plastic bag) with a 155 Evinrude Commercial on his V-20 Wellcraft. The gearcase was bigger and beefier than the stock 150, and it threw that V-20 around like a tennis ball. Never went up against a stock 150, but it was an impressive engine.

Most of it is sales hype.-----Internal engine parts are the same between comercial and recreational.-------But on the 2 cylinder commercial model they use the 3 cylinder gearcase.----Every outboard mechanic knows that the 2 cylinder gearcases are not " robust " at all.-----Some V-4 commercial units use the V-6 gearcase as well.

Back in the 96 commercial models, they did use the VRO pump. Sounds like the 2000 models did away with it. Likely the 1.8 gallon oil tank is just in the way in a typical work boat. While the gear ratio in the lower unit should be the same as that of the consumer models, the heads are not. These heads are lower in compression. As the guys said, this model will run on lower octane fuels, typically found overseas.
